Deccan Expedition 2012-13

The 21st Century can bring some change in natural and mineral wealth of India. Grave but often ignored issues like climate change, pollution, over using of mineral wealth, deforestation, are all posing threat to the earth. Thus, there is an immediate need for its conservation. The process of conservation can only begin and can be done successfully, if one is fully aware of what is to be conserved. With these very thoughts, the 2/9 KAR BATTALION on 21 December 2012 set out for the Deccan expedition. The expedition was flagged off by the Ãir Cdme C Rajeev, Deputy Director General, Karnataka & Goa Directorate, Bangalore.

Our team was filled with anticipation as CHRIST UNIVERSITY had already successfully completed six motorcycle expeditions. The objective and motto of this expedition was to save our natural mineral resources and the role of NCC in nation building.

The journey took us through very long and winding roads touching various towns and cities, big and small, known and unknown. Every time we stopped to educate the people, their joy and warmth touched us and made us proud for the task we had ventured out for. The schools in our itinerary were Government High school in Gooty, Nanded, Goa, Mangalore, Udupi and Thalassery.

We got a chance to visit the Golconda fort, the Charminar and the Salarjung Museum in Hyderabad. We also went to the Ajantha and Ellora caves in Maharashtra which has awesome sculptures of the Buddhist, the Jains and the Hindus. We visited the St. Xavier’s church in Goa which is over 400 years old. On our way to Kannur, we went to the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple. We also went to the Parassini Kadavu snake park where we saw many species of snakes and other reptiles. We were wonderstruck to see many such unseen species. In Kannur, the visit to St. Angelo’s fort, Arakkal museum and the Payyambalam beach was an unforgettable experience. We also went to the Muzzhappalangadu drive-in beach and the Bekal fort in Thalassery. In the end, we visited the Mysore Palace which showcases the prosperous and wealthy rule of the Wodeyars.

While returning, we came through the Bandipur National Forest near Coorg and were surprised by the wildlife traffic. For once, we, humans had to wait for the green signal from them. I personally feel that it is a great way to educate and generate awareness among people on issues that require immediate attention.

Ashwathy Vasanth, I PPES’O’
(Ashwathy was one of the team members from Christ Junior College on this expedition. Congratulations to her for successfully completing the expedition!)

Experiences of Bike expedition to Lakshadweep

The 21st Century can well be said to be the era of oceans. Grave but often ignored issues like climate change, pollution, exploitation of marine life through excessive fishing, among others, are all posing threat to the oceans. Thus, there is an immediate need for its conservation. The process of conservation can only begin and can be done successfully, if one is fully aware of what is to be conserved. With these very thoughts, the 2/9 KAR BATTALION on 21 Deccember 2011 set out for an island expedition to Lakshadweep. The expedition was flagged off by the Group Commander of Bangalore B group Col. Aloke Guha.

Our group was filled with anticipation as CHRIST UNIVERSITY had already successfully completed five motorcycle expeditions. The objective and motto of this expedition was creating awareness about the perils of the island destruction and protection of coral and aquatic life and the role of NCC in nation building.

The journey took us on through very long and winding roads touching various towns and cities, big and small, known and unknown. Every time we stopped to educate the people, their joy and warmth touched us and made us proud for the task we had ventured out for. The schools in our itinerary were Government High school in Attakurki, Salem, Sri Vidyalakshmi Vidyalay, Parampati, Madurai and Minicoy, Jawahar Navodya Vidyalay, Minicoy, Palya Marthadon at Avarikullam, Government Boys Higher Secondary School

But what the whole team was most excited about was to set sail to one of the islands of Lakshadweep, Minicoy. We boarded the ship and sailed to inspect the water. The island was crystal blue in color. Its beauty left us spellbound. It gave us an opportunity to visit the house of the locals. The people there prefer to be on the island than the mainland. They informed us that the arrival of tourists was actually threat to the coral life but it also served as a means of survival for them. They however, gave their message. The snorkeling experience there gave us a sense of underwater life and its beauty.

We had a chance to go into the deeper sea to do scuba diving. We were really impressed and astonished by the pearl like corals. We received the support of the Deputy Collector of Minicoy, Mr. Anup Takore in our endeavour. Other memorable moments in the journey were the Meenakshi Amman temple, the breathtaking sunrise from Madurai to KanyaKumari, the rich temple of Padmanabhapuram Swami temple at Thiruvananthapuram, the Jewish colony and the only Jewish temple in India at Cochin, passing through Kannur, Koyilandi , Mahe. Our visit to the Great Cannanore Fort and the Arrakal Museum gave us a bird’s view of how the kings of Kerala ruled over the state.

Our journey also took us to Sultan Bathery, a forest range in Bandipur National Park and was pleasantly surprised by the wildlife traffic. For once, we humans had to wait for the green signal from them.  I personally feel that it is a great way to educate and generate more awareness among people on issues that require immediate attention. -
