INSPIRE- Science Youth camp
Recently, I
had been to a science workshop held at Manipal Institute of
Technology, Manipal. It aimed at inspiring young minds to
take up science as a career and to encourage and motivate
them to become scientists. This camp was divided into 4 parts
(Seminars, Workshops, Lab Experiments, Demonstrations and
Field trips) over 5 days. On the first day we visited the
Manipal Life Science Centre (MLSC). There, the topic of discussion
was Genetics and this was done with the help of three species
- Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly), Mus musculus (Mice)
and Danio rerio (Zebrafish). Also, we were taken around the
labs, such as Biotechnology, DNA research, etc. The next two
days were related to the Technology and Information sector.
We were taken to the Manipal Institute of Technology for this
purpose. Here, the early hours of the day were spent in helping
us develop an interest in pure subjects and the latter half
of the day was utilized to give us hands on experience on
the various sectors of the IT world. Here we got to understand
many new machines and instruments and also got a demonstration
of basic experiments which have been taught to us theortically.
On the fourth day of this exciting programme many Professors
from IISc., Bangalore and other reputed institutions held
seminars, where they explained the scope and various latest
developments in their respective fields. On the last day,
we took a tour of medicinal plants to learn their uses. Also
there were seminars on the importance of alternate sources
of energy. All in all, this was a very exciting and interesting
trip. I got to learn a lot from it. I am very thankful for
this opportunity. Suhas A Motwani I PCMB D, 10P0517 |

Arts Total Marks: 554 (Fifth Position
in the state) My goals
was pretty straightforward. Based on my track record in school
I had a fair idea of what I was capable of and so I set myself
a goal of scoring 90% or thereabouts in the boards.
Rules of Success
Attendance First things first, Attendance
is critical. Christ has strict rules on attendance of course
and so most of us end up being pretty regular in class. But
I need to emphasize this - be very regular. Just being there
every day in class gives you a continuity and discipline that
really helps while reviewing your lessons and preparing for
assignments, tests and exams later. Sure you can borrow your
friend's notes and make up for missed classes, but nothing
beats having been there in person. It really helps.
Daily dose Review your lessons daily or at
least once every other day. That way, you can digest the portions
in small doses and quickly identify areas that need more work
on your part. This way, you build your concepts brick by brick
and soon, without even realizing it, you have a nice little
wall. It's a great feeling to open your books before an exam
and to realize that there are no nasty surprises in there.
Caution: in all honesty, I must tell you
that this is the most difficult part of college. It is easy
to be disciplined and regular for a week or a fortnight or
in fits and starts. But it requires a lot of will power to
commit to a daily dose of study day after day, week after
week, month after month. Of course you will slip up occasionally
- there will be guests at home, family functions, travel plans,
movies and parties. But you've just got to tell yourself that
sure, I'll do all of that but my first priority is to spend
a little time with my books - every day. Notice that I really
didn't put a number to how many hours I studied every day.
It varied - some days the portions were less, some days it
was more. But they were never too large. Of course, during
exams, my study hours shot up exponentially. But that's only
to be expected!
Project work. In the Christ system, you have
a lot of scope for self-study. I know that I have done more
presentations, book reviews and other projects than I care
to remember. I was also part of the 'Excellent Students' program
where students are made to create presentations on topics
that are relevant but not necessarily from the syllabus -
for example, two of my topics were OPEC and Naxals. Okay,
you do you feel stressed sometimes as you run around to get
reference material, coordinate information with friends, and
then put it all together on PowerPoint and make the whole
show ready before a deadline. I also feel that some of the
presentation topics should have been taught to us formally
in class because they were completely new to us. But having
said that, I do feel that this whole business of researching
and presenting new concepts trains you to manage unstructured
information and convert it into sensible insights. It teaches
you to handle complexity.
Live a normal life. I hope all of the above
has not made me sound like some sort of a nerd who had no
time for life in the exciting and happening city of Bangalore.
Far from it. The best part of keeping some time for studies
on a daily basis was that I also had time for everything else.
Christ offers you tons of opportunities to develop yourself
as a person. Grab them. I liked debates and I have represented
Christ at all the better known college fests in the city from
Esplendida at Carmel and Artemis at JNC to Ideation at Sophia,
Equinox at Joseph's, and a whole bunch of other programs.
I was active in MUN and was a vice chair last year. And of
course, I was active in Spectrum and Xite here at Christ.
And in between all that, I had plenty of time to catch most
movies at a theatre with friends, hang out at Forum and other
places, and go for holidays with my family.
I am thankful for one thing though. Though I attended classes
at Career Launcher for CLAT, they did not eat up my life like
the IIT entrance classes that my friends in science attended.
But hey, that is a choice I made early in life and I'm very
happy with the road I've taken so far. Touch wood! |
