Experiences of Bike
expedition to Lakshadweep
The 21st Century can well be said to be the
era of oceans. Grave but often ignored issues like climate
change, pollution, exploitation of marine life through excessive
fishing, among others, are all posing threat to the oceans.
Thus, there is an immediate need for its conservation. The
process of conservation can only begin and can be done successfully,
if one is fully aware of what is to be conserved. With these
very thoughts, the 2/9 KAR BATTALION on 21 Deccember 2011
set out for an island expedition to Lakshadweep. The expedition
was flagged off by the Group Commander of Bangalore B group
Col. Aloke Guha.
Our group was filled with anticipation as
CHRIST UNIVERSITY had already successfully completed five
motorcycle expeditions.
The objective and motto of this expedition
was creating awareness about the perils of the island destruction
and protection of coral and aquatic life and the role of NCC
in nation building.
The journey took us on through very long
and winding roads touching various towns and cities, big and
small, known and unknown. Every time we stopped to educate
the people, their joy and warmth touched us and made us proud
for the task we had ventured out for. The schools in our itinerary
were Government High school in Attakurki, Salem, Sri Vidyalakshmi
Vidyalay, Parampati, Madurai and Minicoy, Jawahar Navodya
Vidyalay, Minicoy, Palya Marthadon at Avarikullam, Government
Boys Higher Secondary School
But what the whole team was most excited
about was to set sail to one of the islands of Lakshadweep,
Minicoy. We boarded the ship and sailed to inspect the water.
The island was crystal blue in color. Its beauty left us spellbound.
It gave us an opportunity to visit the house of the locals.
The people there prefer to be on the island than the mainland.
They informed us that the arrival of tourists was actually
threat to the coral life but it also served as a means of
survival for them. They however, gave their message. The snorkeling
experience there gave us a sense of underwater life and its
beauty.
We had a chance to go into the deeper sea to do scuba diving.
We were really impressed and astonished by the pearl like
corals. We received the support of the Deputy Collector of
Minicoy, Mr. Anup Takore in our endeavour.
Other memorable moments in the journey were
the Meenakshi Amman temple, the breathtaking sunrise from
Madurai to KanyaKumari, the rich temple of Padmanabhapuram
Swami temple at Thiruvananthapuram, the Jewish colony and
the only Jewish temple in India at Cochin, passing through
Kannur, Koyilandi , Mahe. Our visit to the Great Cannanore
Fort and the Arrakal Museum gave us a bird’s view of
how the kings of Kerala ruled over the state.
Our journey also took us to Sultan Bathery, a forest range
in Bandipur National Park and was pleasantly surprised by
the wildlife traffic. For once, we humans had to wait for
the green signal from them.
I personally feel that it is a great way to educate and generate
more awareness among people on issues that require immediate
attention.

Parliamentary Debate 2011 Winner
A team of twelve students represented Christ
Junior College at the National Law School Parliamentary Debate
conducted by the National Law School India University (NLSIU)
on November 4, 6 and 7, 2011. Karan
Gupta from I PPES O
won the overall individual championship of Best Speaker. Congratulations
to Karan Gupta. Here are his reflections about the competition:
This was a great experience for me and my
friends as the debating was very different from the conventional
type where one just prepares a speech. In Parliamentary Debate,
we assumed varying roles of the proposition and opposition
government and were judged on various criteria like reasoning,
strategy, legality, realism, structure, manner, matter and
more importantly, logic. We went through seven rounds before
reaching the finals. Besides winning the competition, my talk
with the Vice Chancellor was a highlight that I shall cherish.
My sincere gratitude to Mr. P M Varghese, Office of Student
Services and the college for providing this opportunity. |

Christ Junior College
at HMUN India 2011
Sixteen delegates;
Two delegations;
Two faculty advisers;
One International conference
Welcome, to our experience of Harvard Model
United Nations India 2011- The Inaugural Session...
Harvard Model United Nations has been at
the forefront of MUNing in Boston having simulated United
Nations Conferences for the past 59 years. Realising the immense
amount of untapped potential in the Asian sub-continent, the
team from Harvard International Relations Centre that organises
Harvard Model United Nations packed their bags and landed
in Mumbai.
The students of Christ Junior College
represented two member states- Finland and Guinea Bissau-
at this prestigious conference. The delegates represented
their respective countries in the different committees, namely-
United Nations Disarmament and Security Committee, United
Nations Special Decolonization Committee, United Nations World
Intellectual Property Organisation, United Nations Legal Committee,
United Nations Development Program, United Nations Environment
Program, United Nations High Commission for Refugees and United
Nations International Children’s Education Fund. The
Inaugural Session deliberated on issues such as the Non-State
Terrorist Actors, Land and Sea Mines, Gene Patenting, Patent
Laws, Future of Aid to Haiti, Sustainable Practices in Tropical
Rainforests, Food and Nutrition of Refugees, Children and
Terrorism, etc.
The selection process to shortlist the delegates,
was based on their performance in the previous year’s
CJCMUN, a separate selection process which was held in June
and their performance in this year’s CJCMUN delegate
shortlisting group discussions. The best sixteen, namely,
Nikunj Agarwal, Krupa Maria Varghese, Kopal Mukim, Juilee
More, Yohann Ninan John, Owais Shafiq, Suveer Ahuja, Marquis
Milton, Shashank N S, Tulika Agarwal, Soma Hegdekatte, Amrutha
Prasad, Varsha Sriram, Varun Terdal, Rohan Gonsalves and Suhaas
Ema were selected from a crowd of enthusiastic participants
of both first and second PU students.
Prithvi Acharya, a veteran MUN-ner and co-founder
of Bangalore Model United Nations, along with Nikunj Agarwal,
the Head Delegate, took the initiative to gear up the entire
team for the session by holding numerous functional and substantive
training sessions. These sessions covered every aspect of
MUNing from writing position papers, to effective caucusing
and forming resolutions. The delegates were also trained to
compile research, develop diplomatic skills and propagate
their ideas.
The delegates, having done extensive research
and preparation, were finally ready to rise to the occasion
and left for Mumbai, on the 16th of August, 2011. The delegates
from different parts of the world congregated at the World
Trade Centre, Cuffe Parade, Mumbai. What had begun, not too
long ago, as a culmination of the need for achievement, and
the determination for it, had finally bloomed into six-hour
sessions, and almost no sleep.
Each day, was split into two sessions of
three-hours each, with about an hour set aside for lunch.
However, on the third day, instead of participating in session,
delegates were accommodated into “MUN School”,
an interactive training session, organised by the International
Relations Committee of Harvard University, Boston, which involved
not only procedural training, but also modules on public speaking,
organizing one’s own Model United Nations Conference
and also applying to Harvard University.
After the final day of session, the valedictory
ceremony was held at KC College in an atmosphere filled with
anxiousness and hope. The occasion was graced by Lord Meghnad
Desai, an Indian-born British economist and eminent politician
in House of Lords. He was the keynote speaker, and engaged
the delegates in an interactive session, including Jueeli
More, the Finn delegate, of Christ Junior College, after which
the results of each committee were declared by Hunter Richard,
Secretary General, HMUN India, 2011.
From the Christ Junior College Team, Nikunj
Agarwal secured Best Delegation in
the United Nations Environment Program as
Delegate of Guinea-Bissau, Krupa Maria Varghese
secured Best Delegation in the United Nations
Development Program as Delegate
of Guinea-Bissau and
Yohann Ninan John received
an Honourable Mention in the United Nations High Commission
for Refugees, as
Delegate of Guinea-Bissau.
As these delegates hope to conquer the Boston
Conference one day, and even the Harvard World MUN, they lie
content with their achievements. Here’s hoping that,
one day, not too far into the future, Christ Junior College
will be seen at more conferences than ever.

Christite's Kedarnath Expedition
This summer, I got an opportunity to go for this expedition
called the 'the Kedarkantha Expedition' and I would like
to share this experience with you. For those of you who
do not know where Kedarkantha is, it is one of the small
mountain peaks that lie in the midst of other large peaks
in the foothills of the great Himalayan range. You will
probably come across it just as you cross the 12,500 feet
mark, lying on the forest floor in between the pine trees.
When you reach the meadows, it is likely to be a large blanket
of white around you in every direction.
It was a complete group of 8 people from Bangalore including
one of my best friend, Aishwarya, and although we didn’t
know the rest of them we were ready to make friends. So
off we went to Delhi. At Delhi we met the rest of the expeditioners,
who were from different parts of india, few of them were
from Bombay and Delhi. We were now a group of 26 and headed
to Dehradhun in train. The next morning, we had to travel
to uttarkhand by bus! The total journey was about 24 hours.
Even though it was just the beginning of the trip, it was
so tiring that we all wondered, why we ever volunteered!
But when we reached the base camp, which was at the banks
of the river Tons, a small tributary of the Ganges, it was
all worth it! The scene was so beautiful that it is beyond
description. When we reached this place, I realised that
Heaven was nowhere else but on Earth!
The first 3 days were filled with fun and socializing, getting
to know our instructors and fellow expeditioners, who were
going to guide us through the expedition, playing soccer,
learning to wash our own dishes, have river time in the
freezing water, painting the rocks, making yummy maggi.
Although these activities were grouped with training like
jogging everyday for an hour, rifle shooting, bagpacking,
white water river rafting, rock climbing and mountain biking.
It all just seemed like a movie! We all have seen the action
hero's jumping off cliffs or climbing rocks...but who would
have ever thought I actually feel like an action hero! White
water river rafting was one of my favorites, as I do not
know how to swim. I was terrified when we got instructions
that one of the activities were to jump off a small cliff!
I felt like Isabella from twilight when she jumps off the
cliff, the adrenaline pumping and butterflies in my stomach!
But jumping into the freezing cold water was
just awesome! And for those of you'll are wondering, ofcourse
I wore a lifejacket!
This was just the start of the trip! Finally it was the
day to start the trek, all set with the sleeping bags, mats
and a 8-kilo heavy bag! It was a trek for about 5 hours
each day, as it rains everyday in the afternoons...more
like a storm! We set our tents at 3 base camps juda-ka-talab
was the first base camp with was at a height of 4500 ft
above sea level. It was one of the best nights we spent
there, as we set up a brilliant bonfire and we also cooked
our own food (dal and chawal). The trek was in the midst
of the pine jungle and so there were a million pine fly's
surrounding our feet and buzzing which was extremely annoying!
We had dry friuts, biscuits and toffees as our food during
the trek. The second base camp was at 6500 feet... the mountain
was'nt as steep as it initially was... that was a sigh of
relief. The nights were filled with scary story's running
around, wearing warm and thick jackets and ofcourse bonfire's!
The 4th day of our trek was called acclimatization, as we
were trekking to another layer of the atmosphere where it
would get hard to breathe or our nose might bleed. Fortunately
nothing of that sort happened. We could leave our bags at
the base camp. When we were only a few feet from the summit,
we saw the white snow capped peak. It was beyond imagination!
So close but yet so far. I lost hope at so many instances
as it was so steep, but at the back of my mind I always
knew I could do it.
When I finally reached the summit...it was a scene to remember
and treasure it in my mind. It was covered with snow and
all my friends made huge snowballs and wacked me with them.
We also set up our flag at the summit, I felt like Neil
Armstrong on the moon! While coming down the mountain, one
of the most adventurous was sliding through the snow!
This trip was not just a pleasure trip but was a lesson
in my life about how to face different situations in life,
work on your own without the help from your family, push
your limits and believe in yourself that you can achieve
something you have always wished to.

Harshitha
N of II PCMB 'F' has secured 41st
rank in Medicine and 308th
rank in Engineering in the K-CET exam held in
the month of April. Congratulations to her for this achievement.
Harshitha's reflections on her Achievement,
Hard work and perseverance are the keys to
success. With determination we can reach the pinnacle of success.
In Christ Junior College (CJC), a systematic and well-planned
approach is implemented to help students in all aspects. Excellent
students programme, in particular was a booster. The lecturers
are very dedicated and always available when students need
help. A lot of motivation is given to the students and an
exposure to cultural activities helps in overall development.
The ambience in CJC is apt for learning.
Finally, I would like to remind my friends
that nothing is impossible. We have to work in the right manner
and move with a 'never say die' spirit. |

We congratulate S
Arun of II PCMB C for securing 3rd
Rank in Medicine in the COMED-K
exam held recently.
We also congratulate him for securing 8th
Rank in Medicine and 118th
Rank in Engineering in the K-CET
examination held during April 2011.
He is also one of the top 1% in Karnataka in National Standard
Examination in Chemistry. He topped Christ Junior College
in National Standard Examination in Physics.
Here are Arun’s Reflections on his Achievements,
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have secured Rank
8 (CET Medical) and Rank 3 (COMEDK Medical) and at this moment
of celebration, I can only but thank Almighty God, my parents
and teachers for their unconditional support. It is generally
believed that one needs to study for long hours everyday,
compromise favourite T.V shows and other pastimes’ to
chase one’s dreams, but this ideology is not necessarily
true. On the contrary, I believe that one needs to start early,
dream big and work systematically to achieve his/her target.
I, for one, always found time to play cricket in the neighbourhood
and watch the tennis grand slams.
To all aspiring doctors, engineers and other professionals,
I would say, be attentive in class, stop procrastinating and
pay heed to your teachers, for they have gone through these
tough times themselves. These words of Longfellow always motivated
me and perhaps you too will be inspired:
“Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.” |

|
"ALL'S
WELL THAT ENDS WELL". The moment I saw my results
I was so overwhelmed that I could not express anything except
thanking the Almighty for showering his blessings on me. I
felt my hard work and dedication was worth it.
This achievement would not be possible without the faculty
of social science department. Each one of the lecturers were
extremely supportive and encouraging. HATS OFF TO THEM!
The coaching in CJC was very much beyond text books. The special
sessions of the excellence students’ forum was useful.
We had to work on a topic related to any of our subjects.
This extra effort by the teachers made sure that we really
gained some good knowledge of the subject at the end.
If not day to day studies, at least taking the internal examinations
seriously and preparing for them systematically benefitted
me. According to me studying day and night is not the ultimate
thing. The way we apply that information in the given 3hrs,
the way the answers are presented matters a lot. The feedback
and the tips the teachers gave regarding all these were really
useful.
It was not only work and no play in CJC. Right from the beginning
of the academic year a number of activities were lined up.
I took part in music events and other competitions in XITE,
events of SSA, Prerana-language association, FIESTA, MCC,
St. Joseph and other intercollegiate fests. COSMOS - The intercollegiate
project exhibition in which I was a part of Sociology project
was truly educative.
I would convey my gratitude to my parents and grandparents
for being supportive. Special thanks to my sister for constantly
supporting me in all my endeavours.
Along with excellence and service CJC moulded my personality,
taught to balance studies and other activities, time management
and what not?
Last but not the least, I would say though I spent only two
years in CJC the values I imbibed here would be imprinted
in my life forever.

Reflections
The first day, I entered Christ Junior college, with sweet memories
of a creditable performance in the tenth board, still lingering
in my mind. I thought to myself, “Here is my chance to
prove my mettle in this wonderful college.” I had taken
Humanities with subjects in which I had aptitude. I heaved a
sigh of relief when I thought that I need not pursue Science
and Mathematics, furthermore. ‘Christ College’-
The very fact that I now belonged to this reputed institution
gave me a sense of pride and hence, I felt an accountability
to do the institution proud.
And so, gradually I started working slowly, yet steadily, on
my way towards my goal. I was extremely happy to find that the
faculty here was, without a doubt, one of the best one could
ask for. There were not merely teachers imparting knowledge,
but much beyond that - they gave us the proper guidance and
encouragement. At this juncture, I fondly remember our Class
Teacher, who also taught us English, Ms Marina Ma’m .
She always instilled in me a lot of confidence and taught me
to have belief in myself and faith in my abilities. I will always
remain grateful to her.
In the second year ,to my great joy, I came to know that she
was going to be our class teacher ,once again .That year , the
college also conducted an orientation programme, for the outstanding
students in academics, in what was called “The Excellent
Student Programme” , for which I too was selected. All
the subject teachers guided the students and gave them training
in how to allocate time to studies, tackling the portions, correct
presenting of the papers and so on. This was a bonus to us.
Things started getting serious, when in the latter part of the
second year, I was given Proficiency in Academics. This gave
me a lot of impetus to excel. I started, therefore, working
hard with renewed focus. The level set for me, I realized then,
by my college, was high.
From the home front too, I got the rock like anchorage and support
from my parents. My grandparents too were very encouraging in
times of stress and strain.
Above all, I owe my success to the Lord Almighty, without whose
blessings I would not have been able to achieve what I have
done today.
The thrill of experiencing success is surely an exhilarating
one. I think I can compare it with the joy that a mountaineer
experiences after he reaches the summit. It was consistent hard
work, perseverance and commitment that paid off at the end.
Yet, as Robert Frost has said --There is lot to be done still,
and promises to keep, And miles and miles to go before I sleep
.

A
story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because
that is how life is - full of surprises.
Isaac Bashevis Singer
Dusk was creeping in. Foraging birds turned
towards their nests and fledglings. The sun sank slowly into
the far west. It was about time the results were out on the
10th of May, 2011. Finally when the clock struck 6, the results
were out and it held a pleasant surprise for me! Having expected
a distinction and a decent show in the boards, what I received
was indeed a surprise package! A grand total of 578/600 i.e.
96.33 %.
The first thing I did was to call up my class
teacher and share this happy news. Then came the turn of friends!
My inbox was flooded by a deluge of messages from friends
enquiring about my performance and reporting theirs. I was
quite satisfied with my performance and savored the moment!
A year’s effort had borne fruit! The gratitude towards
my teachers is something that cannot be put fully expressed
in words.
Having been a Christite for all the 16 years
of my schooling, I realised with a heavy heart that it was
now time to move on seeking greener pastures and pursue my
ambition of becoming an Engineer! As my thoughts fluttered
away on the wings of dreams, I look back and realise, I am
done with my 2nd PU!

Soon after
the achievement
I was eagerly waiting for my results. Its further postponement
had increased my eagerness. Along with the confidence of a good
performance I also had a slight fear about the percentage I
would receive. Finally on 10th evening, I was overjoyed and
also relieved when my father said to me the percentage (97.33)
I had secured over the phone. I was happy for achieving my target
and shared my excitement with my parents, sister and my grandmother
and later with my friends and relatives. My grandmom became
quite emotional. Whole year’s hard work had paid off.
It was even more pleasing to know that I had topped my college.
The credit for this success goes to my parents, my teachers
and my college whose constant support and encouragement helped
me a lot. I also feel that the role of my friends is quite significant,
be it in the form of fun we had, the help they made and most
importantly for keeping alive the competitive spirit in me.

It has been a dream-come
true for me to get the second rank in the commerce stream at
Christ College. Wow!!! It‘s a great feeling which I will
never forget. It was a mixture of happiness, joy, satisfaction,
pride, and most of all the amazing feeling of success! It was
exciting to see the twinkle of joy in my family’s eyes,
the ultimate pleasure on my teachers’ faces, and all the
hugs exchanged between my friends and me. This achievement has
boosted my confidence and inspired me to reach greater heights.
My journey in Christ Junior College has been a wonderful experience.
This college has instilled in me the vigor to work harder and
the power to realize my dreams. I would like to attribute this
success to the entire Commerce Department. Their dedicated support,
constant motivation, love and affection has been phenomenal.
This institution has provided me a platform to fulfill whatever
I have ever dreamt of. The past two years at Christ Junior College
have undoubtedly helped me shape my personality into a more
confident and focused individual.
I would like to suggest to all of you, my dear juniors, to strongly
believe in your potential, self motivate and work hard to realize
the path of success. Instead of constantly focusing on your
areas of weakness, nurture your strengths and stay focused on
your goal. Realize that these steps are not the end game but
only a means to reach your final destination.

Stepping into Christ
Junior College was a dream come true for me, and having secured
96.83% in Second PU Board exams is a milestone which I have
reached with flying colours. I am overwhelmed with this achievement
and at the same time delighted to have stood up to the expectations
placed in me by my Principal, lecturers, family and friends.
While my main focus was on qualitative study time and not quantitative,
I was also active in other curricular activities of CJC. As
all study and no play makes boring, to study with dedication
and also to pursue other interests and not slog the entire year
was the mantra. I consider myself fortunate to continue as a
Christite for 3 more exciting years in the University. I will
continue to strive for achieving greater heights in the coming
years in University also with the same enthusiasm. I wish all
my juniors to be better than the best in their academics. Thank
you one and all.
